Why sequin choice matters
For evening dresses sold on Fashion Nova, SHEIN, Temu, or Windsor Store-style storefronts, sequin selection is not only aesthetic—it drives returns, photo QC pass rates, and chargeback risk. The wrong sequin size or attachment method looks stunning in studio lighting and fails after one wear or one carton transit.
Flat sequins (3–5 mm)
Flat sequins remain the volume workhorse for bodycon minis and midi dresses. They lay close to the fabric, photograph evenly, and pack denser in cartons. Specify density maps on the tech pack: sparse fields look cheap; over-dense fields crack when stretched. Ask your factory for a stretch swatch before bulk.
Holographic and iridescent
Holographic sequins convert well in video and carousel images. They also reveal shade variation under different warehouse LED lighting. Approve SMS under both daylight and warm retail lighting, and lock a master shade card for reorders.
Velvet and matte sequins
Velvet sequin fields deliver premium handfeel for colder-season drops. They shed differently than flat PVC sequins—request a rub test and confirm lining coverage so skin contact stays comfortable for try-on content creators.
Fringe and tassel sequin
Fringe drives social video but creates packing challenges. Specify how fringe is folded in polybags and whether carton compression is allowed. Many platform returns originate from tangled fringe rather than fit issues.
Attachment methods
Sewn vs glued vs heat-applied sequin films behave differently in wash and stretch tests. For stretch bodycon, prefer sewn or film systems validated on the exact base fabric. Document the method on the BOM so season-two reorders do not silently switch.
Buyer checklist
- Approve a physical SMS, not only digital renders.
- Lock sequin size, color lot, density map, and attachment method.
- Run a five-wear stretch and rub test before PO.
- Confirm lining and care label language for US/EU markets.
- Archive photos of the approved SMS for AQL comparison.
